The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of

Magnification

One day I left my house to go shopping. As I walked through the gate and turned to walk along the pavement I realised that a circular region of my view was magnified.

This is just a suitable image I found. I do not live in Boston.

I have seen it speculated that this might be caused by a water droplet in front of the pupil. However the magnified region (inner circle in the image below) was undistorted. I could see the region between the circles compressed but the details still recognisable. The screen resolution is inadequate to show this properly.

It is difficult to see how this effect could be produced by a lens. I was able to look around for a while without losing the effect. Eventually I deliberately blinked a couple of times and my vision returned to normal. That was the only time I experienced this.
